Tithes were a medieval tax designed to provide upkeep for the parish parson. In theory they amounted to one tenth of a parishioner's income, in cash or in kind. Over the years payment in kind diminished as it was cumbersome to administer and cash became the norm. The Tithe Commutation Act of 1836 made this into law, tithes could now be converted into a rent charge on property owned. This led to detailed maps being produced in parishes which took up the Act to identify all property liable to rent charge. The Hertfordshire portion of Studham produced Tithe Apportionment map and reference book in 1840

The reference book accompanying the Tithe Apportionment map of 1852 for the Bedfordshire portion of Studham, and for Humbershoe [AT43/1] dates to 1853 and is set out below. One copy of the map was lodged with the Tithe Redemption Commission, another to the Bishop and a third to the parish officers. Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Records Service's copy is that deposited by the Diocese of Saint Albans. The number refers to the number on the map, the first name is the owner, the second the occupier, then comes a description of the land and/or property and finally the area it covers:
