Guide to Bedfordshire Parishes
This section is designed to help anyone not sure of the location and status of a place in Bedfordshire.
Bedfordshire Parishes & Places
The following list gives details for each parish in the county as well as listing hamlets, townships, ends and localities within parishes. The section contains three basic types of place:
* ANCIENT PARISHES: indicated in bold, are those parishes created before the Norman Conquest of 1066;
* PARISHES: indicated in ordinary script, are those parishes created after the Norman Conquest of 1066. Modern parishes comprise Civil Parishes and Ecclesiastical Parishes. The Civil Parish is the body responsible for the delivery of local government to a locality whereas the Ecclesiastical Parish is the area served by the Church of England parish church. The boundaries of the corresponding Civil and Ecclesiastical Parish may often be different. The split between Civil and Ecclesiastical Parish occurred quite early, the earliest Bedfordshire example being Stanbridge, formerly part of Leighton Buzzard, where a separate Ecclesiastical Parish was created in 1735, the corresponding Civil Parish not being created until 1866. In some cases the Civil Parish may have been abolished, though the Ecclesiastical parish remains (Leagrave, for example) or vice-versa (Battlesden for example), if no date of abolition or union is given for a parish it may be inferred that it still exists
* PLACES: indicated by italics, are those settlements which are part of a parish, for example Aley Green being part of Caddington; these localities are not and have never been parishes of any type.
