47 High Street Upper Gravenhurst

47 High Street was listed by English Heritage in January 1995 as Grade II, of special interest. The cottage dates from the 18th century with 19th century casement windows and laundry. The 18th century portion is two-storeyed, timber-framed and covered by colour-washed render, beneath a clay-pantiled roof with several courses of brick at the eaves. The single-storey laundry is colour-washed brick with a tiled roof.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the cottage [DV1/C214/32] noted that it was owned by C Collins and occupied by A Odell at a rent of four shillings, presumably per week. Accommodation comprised a living room, a store place, a scullery, a kitchen and two bedrooms , one of which was unused. The word “condemned” has been rubbed out and replaced by the quaint phrase “somewhat shaky”.
