6 High Street in 1960 [Z53/122/4]
6 High Street in 1960 [Z53/122/4]

6 High Street was listed by English Heritage in August 1983 as Grade II, of special interest. The building dates from the 18th century and is timber-framed with colour washed plaster. The structure has one storey and attics beneath a thatched roof.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting 6 High Street discovered that it was then three separate dwellings – all owned by E. Wildman [DV1/C73/119-121.

Running east to west the individual tenements were: one in the occupation of A Swales who paid rent of £1/6/6 per quarter from 1926 for a box room, a living room, a pantry, one bedroom and two barns; the middle one occupied byMrs Barnes who paid 2/6 per week for a parlour, a living room, a kitchen, two bedrooms and a barn; the one at the west end in the occupation of J. E. Cannon who paid £4 per annum purely for a ground floor living room and bedroom, the valuer commenting: "no upstairs".
