Hazells Lodge Sandy

Hazells Lodge August 2010
Hazells Lodge August 2010

Hazells Lodge stands at the end of the main drive from Hazells Hall to Everton Road. The lodge was listed by the former Department of Environment in December 1979 as Grade II, of special interest. The department dated the property to the mid 19th century and stated: “believed to have been brought from the Crimean
War”. It is pre-fabricated and comprises one storey beneath a thatched roof. being a lodge to Hazells Hall it was, of course, built by the Pym family.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Sandy, like most of the county, was assessed in 1927 and the valuer visiting Hassells Lodge [DV1/C189/104] found it occupied by Jean Light.

The wood and thatched “poor” structure comprised a living room, kitchen and bedroom. A washhouse, earth closet and coal shed lay outside along with a small garden. Water came from an outside tap. The valuer commented: “Poor thatched lodge”.
