40 High Town Road Luton

40 and 42 High Town Road June 2011
40 and 42 High Town Road June 2011

40 and 42 High Town Road are handsome properties. Number 40 was a hairdresser's in the late 19th century and later a draper's, an ironmonger's and a do-it-yourself store. At the time of writing [2011] it sells meat.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting 40 High Town Road found it occupied by Arthur Henry Phillips, who was a draper and occupied the shop, along with 42 High Town Road next door. He sublet the living accommodation to T. Weston at 10/6 per week. The owner is not stated but was probably the owner of 42 High Town Road, Janes Brothers Limited, who also owned 38 High Town Road.

T. Weston had an entrance from Burr Street. He occupied a living room measuring 13 feet 6 inches by 10 feet and a kitchen measuring 10 feet by 7 feet on the ground floor. First floor accommodation comprised a reception room over Phillips’ shop measuring 13 feet by 12 feet 6 inches and second floor accommodation comprised two bedrooms measuring, respectively, 7 feet by 12 feet and 6 feet 6 inches by 10 feet.
