Westbank Cottages about 1910 [Z1130/3a/29]

1-3 Westbank Cottages were listed by English Heritage in March 1987 as Grade II, of special interest. The the row of three cottages dates from the later 18th century, with mid 19th century additions at each end. They are constructed of colourwashed roughcast render probably over a timber frame to the main block and over brick to later parts.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed as to its rateable value. Aspley Guise was assessed in 1927. The valuer visiting Westbank Cottages noted that they were owned by the Misses Litchfield, who lived at Hillside in the village. All three were connected to mains drainage and water.

Number 1 (the furthest north-east) was occupied by Mrs. Catherine Summerling who paid six shillings per week in rent (the same as before the Great War). Her accommodation comprised two living rooms, a kitchen, scullery and w. c. with three bedrooms above. A barn stood outside. The valuer noted that the property was only partly roofed in thatch.

Next door lived Miss Alice M. Watson who paid 15/6 per month in rent, the pre-war figure having been thirteen shillings. The accommodation comprised a living room, kitchen and scullery downstairs with two bedrooms above. Outside stood a barn and a w. c.

The third cottage was in the occupation of the Misses Kelly, who paid £14/10/- per annum. They had two living rooms, a kitchen and a larder downstairs with three bedrooms above. Again, a barn and a w. c. stood outside.
