Rewrite History Challenge

Bedfordshire Archives Service is proud to launch a creative writing competition open to all Year 5 to Year 13 students studying in Bedfordshire schools.

The competition is free to enter and the finalists will be judged by local children’s author Kate Milner. Kate is the winner of the 2016 Victoria and Albert Museum Student Illustrator of the Year Award. Her new book My Name is not Refugee is due to be published in May 2017.

Information for Teachers

We’ve selected a range of primary sources from Bedfordshire’s archives that we think would make great inspiration for a short story or poem. We’d love you to discuss these sources with your students and encourage them to select one to use in a creative piece of writing.

Copies of all the sources are available in PowerPoint format at the bottom of this page. There are separate sources for use by students in Key Stages 2/3 and 4/5.

Students can submit one entry in the poem and short story categories of the competition. Poems can be up to 20 lines in length and the short stories must not exceed 500 words. They will be judged based on language, originality and the way the archive source has been used.

Entering the Competition

The Rewrite History Challenge opens on the 17th October 2016 and the deadline for all entries is the 10th February 2017. Entries received after this date will not be considered.

Entries to the competition can be sent by email to rewrite.history@bedford.gov.uk or in the post to:

The Winners

Two finalists will be chosen from each of the following categories:

  • Key Stage 2
  • Key Stage 3
  • Key Stage 4
  • Key Stage 5

One winning entry will then be chosen from Key stage 2 or 3 and another will be chosen from Key stage 4 or 5.

The two winners will each receive £20 in book tokens and a further £100 in book tokens for their school. The top 20 stories and poems will be published as an anthology and will be available through Bedfordshire Archives. A copy of the anthology will be free to the two winners.

Further information about the competition can be found in the Terms and Conditions below.
