East of England Archivists Meet at Bedford

Bedfordshire & Luton Archives recently hosted a meeting of the Society of Archivists East of England. Martin Deacon gave the meeting an introduction to his work on our website's 2000+ community archive pages, to which he has recently added Westoning. This was followed by Pamela Birch talking about our approach to deciding what should be kept from the collections of Twentieth century architects. This is something of a speciality of our office as we not only hold the nationally important collection of Richardson & Houfe, but also the collections of Inskip, Victor Farrar, Chrystal & West, Usher & Anthony, Victor Gedge, Albert Prosser, Manning & Steel, H A Rolls, and C Gurney Burgess. When MEPK closed their Bedford office in March this year we took in a large collection from them, which we are currently sorting prior to cataloguing (see photograph of sorting area below!).

The MEPK records await sorting

After a tour of the Archives area of the Riverside Building, the archivists discussed recent developments in each repository, including the successful opening of a new archive store and searchroom facility at Huntingdon. We also welcome the news that the Society of Archivists has recently agreed with the Association of County Archivists in Local Goverment and the National Council on Archives to merge. The new organisation will be called the Archives and Records Association (UK and Ireland), and we hope it will bring a cohesive voice to promote the importance of Archives Services throughout the country.
