An estate, in the context of our holdings, is the collective land and properties owned by one landowner or family. They are usually a wealthy and sometimes titled or gentry family whose land, property and titles have been handed down through the generations via inheritance with both purchases and sales taking place in each generation either enhancing or diminishing the estate's value.
Amongst the landed estates we hold records for are the Dukes of Bedford at Woburn Abbey [ref: R], the De Grey and Lucas family of Wrest Park [ref: L] and the Whitbread family of Southill Park [ref: W].
On the pages in this section you'll find guidance on estate correspondence and family estate papers, some specific estate collections and some advice on researching garden history as the gardens on a landed estate have proved a very popular research topic in recent years. Manorial documents also relate to landed estates and so lists and information relating to them can also be found here.
