103 Hillfoot Road Shillington

103 Hillfoot Road July 2015
103 Hillfoot Road, Shillington

103 Hillfoot Road was once a bakery. The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the property [DV1/C74/64] found it owned and occupied by Asa Rust. The only baker by the name of Rust listed in directories for Shillington is Isaac Rust who is listed in 1864 and 1877. Asa is listed in directories for 1906, 1910, 1914, 1920, 1924 and 1928, initially as a grocer later simply as a shopkeeper; Mrs Sarah Elizabeth Rust is listed in 1931 and 1936.

The property comprised two living rooms, two kitchens and four bedrooms suggesting that it had once been divided into two separate dwellings. The valuer commented "Shop only a front room". There was a loft over a kitchen and a wood and tiled coal barn, an earth closet, an open shed, a wood and corrugated iron loose box, three barns, an open hovel, another loose box and a barn which "used to be bakehouse" all stood outside.
