Vagrants Whipped and Expelled from Kempston 1690-1699

The following comes from one of the parish registers for Kempston [P60/1/9] note the original spellings.

A register of Vagrant Beggars that have been whipt and sent from ye parish of Kempston with a Pass according to Law.

September ye 19th 1690 Thomas Dean was taken and punished according to ye Statute in yt case made and sent away with a Pass subecribed by ye Minister and Constable of Kempston to Worleigh in ye County of Stafford wher he confessed he was borne.

October ye 1st 1690 James Clifford was taken and punished and sent away to Stratton in Shropshire where he was last a settled Inhabitant.

In ye month of November 1690 Mary Standish and Mary Whaley were taken and sent away to Braintford in ye County of Middlesex, where they confessed yei were born and last settled inhabitants.

February ye 9th 1693 George Scrivener and his wife were taken and punished and sent away to Leighton in Bedfordshire where yei confessed had an house of yeir own and inhabited a year last past.

June ye 13th 1695 Richard Wall ye elder & Richard Wall ye younger were taken up and punished & sent away to Oversell or Nethersell in Leicestershire where yeix were born and settled as inhabitants.

Thomas Hartley January ye 17th 1695 was taken up begging and whipt and sent away to Newton in ye Isle of Eley in ye County of Cambridge where he confessed he was born.

Samuel Withars was December ye 10th day 1696 taken up begging and whipt and sent away to Old Weston in ye County of Huntingdon where he was born and his father lived.

Henry Wood was June ye 12th day 1699 taken up begging and whipt and sent away to Arlan in ye County of Cumberland where was born.

John Stacey of ye parish of St Edes in ye County of Huntingdon was Aug: ye 24th 1699 taken up begging and whipt and sent away to St Edes.

Vincent Cockain of ye parish of St Gyles in ye Fields in ye County of Middlesex was Aug: ye 24 1699 taken up begging and whipt and sent away to ye parish of St Gyles in ye Fields.
