22 High Street Thurleigh

22 High Street was listed by English Heritage in August 1983 as Grade II, of special interest. The cottage dates from about 1700 and is timber-framed with colour washed roughcast render. It comprises one storey and attics beneath a pantiled roof. There is a 20th century extension at the east gable end.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 legislated for every building and piece of land to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Thurleigh, like much of the county, was assessed in 1927. The valuer visiting 22 High Street [DV1/C73/114] discovered that it as owned by T. Smith and occupied by J. Hullatt who paid rent of £12 per annum. That included nearly an acre of land in an adjoining field.

The property comprised a parlour, a living room, and kitchen, dairy with one room over and three bedrooms in the attics. The valuer commented: "Big rambling place". There were also farm buildings which comprised two loose boxes, a small granary, a hen house, two piggeries and a garage.
