8 Rotten Row April 2015

8 Rotten Row was listed by the former Department of Environment in June 1974 as Grade II, of special interest. The cottage dates from the 18th century and was altered in the following century. It is built of colour-washed roughcast over a timber frame, with brick casing to the south-east gable end, and has a thatched roof. It comprises one storey and attics.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the cottage [DV1/C215/47] found it owned and occupied by S Wise. It stood in just over a quarter of an acre and comprised a living room, a kitchen and two bedrooms. A weather-boarded and thatched barn, a weather-boarded and thatched store barn and a weather-boarded and tiled coal store all stood outside.
