Oakdale Methodist Church Luton

Dunstable Road Primitive Methodist church from Irving Rumbles' booklet
Oakdale Methodist church from Irving Rumbles' booklet

Oakdale Methodist church was formed in 1964 when the congregation of the formerly Wesleyan Methodist church in Dallow Road sold its church and moved in with the formerly Primitive Methodist church in Dunstable Road, built in 1924. The new church was renamed Oakdale in recognition of the fact that the church is on the corner with Oak Road and Dallow Road church had been on the corner of Dale Road.

Irving Rumbles in his valuable leaflet on Methodism in Luton in the 20th century notes that in 1965 Luton circuits were reorganised into two, Luton North and Luton South. Oakdale became part of Luton South Circuit. These two circuits were re-amalgamated into a Luton Circuit in 1987 which, in 2010, joined with Chiltern Downs Circuit to form the new South Bedfordshire Circuit. Oakdale remains a Methodist chapel at the time of writing [2012], still in the Primitive Methodist church built in 1924 and is part of this circuit.
