Canal Workers in the 1841 Census

Towpath Bridge at Grants Wharf 1976
Towpath Bridge at Grants Wharf 1976 [Z50/74/26]

The following references to canal workers come from the 1841 Census return for Linslade. Clearly some canal workers on the Linslade stretch would live elsewhere but these figures show the impact on Linslade.

Grant's Wharf was later known as Brantom's Wharf and lay on the east bank of the canal just south of the road, between Grand Union House and the canal.

Grant's Wharf

  • Thomas Forrester, 50, accountant, not born in Buckinghamshire
  • William Ladd, wharfinger, born in Buckinghamshire

Osborn's Wharf
