32 and 34 Green End Road March 2012
32 and 34 Green End Road March 2012

32 to 36 Green End Road comprise three cottages, which were listed by English Heritage in August 1987 as Grade II, of special interest. They date from the 17th or early 18th centuries and are timber-framed and rendered with colourwashed roughcast beneath thatched roofs. They all comprise a single storey with attics.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. The valuer visiting the cottages [DV1/C35/23-26] found that they then comprised four dwellings with the later Number 34 being divided into two.

The details of the four dwellings, running east to west, were as follows:

  • A dwelling owned by Mrs. S. J. Smith and occupied by Mrs. S. Smith without rent. Her accommodation comprised a living room, kitchen and scullery with two bedrooms in the attics; a barn and an earth closet stood outside. The valuer commented: "Very old indeed". Another hand has written "Very Poor".
  • A dwelling owned by Mrs. Rickwood and occupied by A. Wallinger, who was out and so his rent could not be determined. His accommodation comprised a living room and kitchen, with one bedroom above. The valuer commented: "Awful Cottage".
  • A dwelling owned by Mrs. Rickwood and tenanted by W. Bird who, again, was out. His accommodation was identical to Wallinger's next door and the same comment applied.
  • A cottage owned by W. Villar and in the occupation of T. Dale whose rent, set in 1922, was 2/6 per week. Accommodation comprised a living room and kitchen with two bedrooms in the attics. A barn and an earth closet stood outside. This, again, was an: "Awful Place".
