3 and 5 London Road Girtford

3 and 5 London Road August 2010
3 and 5 London Road August 2010

3 and 5 London Road was listed by the former Department of Environment in December 1979 as Grade II, of special interest. The department dated the property to the 17th century. It is built of roughcast over a timber frame and has a single storey and attics beneath a thatched roof.

The Rating and Valuation Act 1925 specified that every building and piece of land in the country was to be assessed to determine its rateable value. Sandy, like most of the county, was assessed in 1927 and the valuer visiting 3 and 5 London Road [DV1/C28/46-47] found the building owned by R. Bywater. Number 3 was occupied by B. Bywater who paid rent of £9/10/0 per annum and Number 5 was in the occupation of  J. Quince who paid rent of £10 per annum.

Number 3 comorised a living room and kitchen with two bedrooms in the attics above. A timber and tiled barn converted into two sheds and a brick w. c. lay outside. The valuer commented: “Cramped and low rooms”. He also observed: “Very old and dilapidated”.

Number 5 also comprised a living room and kitchen with two bedrooms above. A brick and tiled washhouse, a brick w. c. and a barn converted into three sheds lay outside. The valuer commented that this also was “very old and dilapidated”.
