36 The Avenue Bletsoe

36 The Avenue was listed by English Heritage in August 1987 as Grade II, of special interest. They noted that it is a cottage of 16th or 17th century origin, modernised and extended to the rear.

It is a timber-framed building with colour-washed plaster infill. The house is thatched and has a three room plan with a central hearth inserted into an earlier smoke bay which partially survives in the roof structure.

It would be interesting to see how it was described in 1927 when Bletsoe was visited by the valuer under the 1925 Rating and Valuation Act. Unfortunately both 36 and 38 seem to have been included under the same reference. Clearly, from reading the entry, this cannot be the case and the entry seems to refer to 38, given the size of premises described. One must, therefore, conclude that the valuer missed Number 36 out for some reason; perhaps tenants were out and he could not gain admission.
