Ye Barn Aspley Guise

Ye Barn around 1920
Ye Barn around 1920 [Z50/31/12]

Ye Barn lies on its own in Spinney Lane about half way between Aspley Guise Lower School and council houses. It is a picturesque place with a splendid view over a field towards Bedford Road and Aspley House. It is probably 18th century in date.

In 1927 this part of Bedfordshire was valued under the terms of the Rating Valuation Act 1925; every piece of land and property was inspected to determine the rates to be paid on it. The valuer visiting Ye Barn noted that the owner was a Mrs.Plowden with Harry Crute as tenant. The valuer thought the place was brick and thatch and noted two living rooms and a scullery, kitchen and larder downstairs with two bedrooms above; outside were a timber and corrugated iron barn and earth closet; water had to be drawn from a well. The valuer also noted the exposed timber beams inside.
